For the life lessons assignment, I interviewed my grandmother. I interviewed her because I truly enjoy her presence and I wanted to know more about her life, and her. Based on the questions I asked her, and her answers I can take away a lot from it. For starters, I can say not to take our lives for granted. I say this because my grandmother wants to go back to the age I am. Her saying made me realize that I should enjoy these years, and make the best out of them because I am never going to be able to go back. Another thing I learned is that mistakes and failures are common in life. We should always move forward and not dread the past because life is stopping for no one.

Interviewee: Maria Ocampo ( Sanaya’s Grandmother)
Interviewer : Sanaya M. Rodriguez Date of Interview : 8/3/2022 Location : Sanaya’s House List of Acronyms: MO = Maria Ocampo, SR= Sanaya Rodriguez SR: Who is someone who is a role model for you, and has inspired you? MO: My mother is an inspiration to me. I wanted to be like her because she was a strong woman coming from nothing. She was a good wife, and mother, and always supported her family. Even after a long day of work she always made sure to take care of my siblings, and me. Without her, in my life, I would’ve struggled with many things. SR: What are some essential lessons in your life that have stuck with you? MO: An important lesson would be to always help and inspire others. I always wanted to raise my children to be as my parents had taught me. I also try to do the same with my grandchildren every time I get the chance to see them. You can always help someone in your daily life by just giving them a little advice. SR: Do you regret doing things that may have had an effect on the people around you? MO: Yes, we all make mistakes from time to time. The important thing is to ask for forgiveness and heal the wounds. It’s very normal to make mistakes, we must learn from them and grow as people. SR: Is there anything you don’t regret doing? MO: Coming to live in NJ and raising my children was one thing I have never regretted. Coming here from Puerto Rico has made a total change in my life. SR: What age would you want to go back to? MO: I would want to go back to 18 or 15. It’s truly a time when your life starts, and you start to become an adult and take on more responsibilities. These were very fun times in my life filled with great memories. SR: When you were my age what were you doing? MO: When I was 14 I was very focused on my studies. Though, I still had fun going to different places around my country. Once, I went with my cousins to a dance theater and visited towns in Puerto Rico all on the same day. The sights in Puerto Rico were truly beautiful, and cannot wait to go back. SR: What do you enjoy now? MO: Well as you get older, sometimes your health becomes poor and you are not able to do the things you were able to do. So days where I feel healthy, and feel like I can move. I also enjoy going to Church and singing with my friends during choir. SR: What world events molded you as a person? MO: The forest fires in the USA have been a big event in the world that did affect my life. It just showed how people were very careless and did not care about our environment. As a person that showed me to take care of our earth because there is only one. I began to do more things to help our environment and encouraged others to do so too. Another one was the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Though I was living in Puerto Rico it was very hard to see that someone was able to do something that horrible to someone. I was around the age of 8 years old and I can remember it like it was yesterday. I always thought there were people who were capable of doing things like that to me or the people I loved. SR: Is there anything you still want to do? MO: Well, I would love to see the cities and towns in the USA. Though I can see it through a computer screen it does not feel the same. The world is so beautiful and I would just love to see all of the beauty it has to offer. SR: What do you want to be remembered for? MO: I want to be remembered as someone who made the people around her feel loved. I would also like to be recognized for the love I have for God, and the faith that I had for him. |
